July 18, 2025 – Today, Yola released her “AMAZING” high octane new single released via S Curve Records. It draws on progressive R&B, rock, 80s soul and electronica, and is yet another genre-fluid sonic statement from the great vocalist of our time.

The song finds Yola manifesting healthy relationships following a series of dating nightmares, she states, “Amazing” was written as I began dating in the US and imagining my future partner. I was visualizing the kind of person I’d meet and the strength we’d need to make it a healthy and happy relationship. “Amazing” is a wish in a song that came true, so I’m putting it out for everyone else to see that manifestation works!”

Listen to HERE / Watch visualizer HERE

Yola spoke exclusively with PEOPLE.com about the single release, her appearance at Essence Festival, her forthcoming tour with Maxwell and dream collaborators, including manifesting a collaboration with producer D-Mile. She stated to PEOPLE.com, “There’s lots of dreams, but my pinnacle dream of every single dream is writer and producer D’Mile. You’ll know him from the dope ass production and writing on Victoria Monét’s album Jaguar and obviously Silk Sonic. He’s so busy. Everyone loves him. They never want to work with anyone else, and this is a real curse because you’re just so delightful that no one leaves. Yola’s dream of dreams is working with D’Mile. We’re going to manifest it.”

Yola recently appeared & performed at Essence Festival, which featured an all star line up that included Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Muni Long, Jazmine Sullivan and R&B legend Maxwell – who Yola will also open for on tour this September. The run includes Washington, D.C on September 18-20th and for the Brooklyn, NY show on Sep 28th.

Discussing her upcoming tour, exclusively with PEOPLE.com, Yola stated, “Maxwell hears my music, DMs me once we follow each other, and the show is confirmed to be happening and we’re about to announce, and it’s like, “You are the best artist I have heard in a decade, at least. Anything you need, you are so dope. Keep doing what you’re doing.” My jaw was on the floor of such a considerable cosign. That process found me through me telling my whole story musically, and that’s always been my mission.”

Yola also appeared on Essence Festival’s Musical is Ours panel discussing the importance of her role as persephone in Hadestown and Black female representation on Broadway. Discussing the importance of that role, Yola stated exclusively to PEOPLE.COM,

“It was really important for Black female representation on Broadway, because they hadn’t had a plus-size Persephone before. And although I’m not the biggest girl in the whole wide world, I’m thick enough, thank you very much. I ate my meals, and I did my squats in the right way to be thick, and that’s what I want to be. They just hadn’t had a thick Persephone. I’m like, “It’s time you had a thick and chocolatey Persephone for the win.” So, I got to do these kinds of things that you do on Broadway in this body. [It] is a very physical role. People have had injuries in this role. To go into it, knowing that and thriving in it and representing in that way is so positive for young people to see in music, for our younger Gen Zs [and] Gen Alphas to see. Fitness comes in lots of different shapes and sizes. I still get to get calls to represent [Hadestown] because I did a good job. Especially in the Hadestown cast, you see so many different kinds of [people] from so many different backgrounds, it’s great that we also included an intersection that is often disrespected. There’s the intersection of Blackness and femininity. There’s the intersection of dark skin Blackness and femininity, but there’s also the intersection of dark skin Blackness, plus-sized femininity. All of those have their different spikes of why it’s different to see someone that looks like that versus someone else. Everyone that’s in any one of those intersections then gets the opportunity to see themselves in you.”

Yola will also perform on August 25 at Stephen Talkhouse in East Hampton, NY, featuring as part of Maren Morris’s headline performance, with Yola joining as a special guest. The Soho sessions event will benefit Music Will and is sponsored by the FLAG Art Foundation.

Yola recently concluded her Sovereign Soul Tour, which celebrated her critically acclaimed EP My Way. The EP was produced by Yola, GRAMMY Award-winning producer Sean Douglas (Lizzo, Chris Brown, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Sia), and producer Zach Skelton (Lil Nas X, John Legend, Paul McCartney) and marked a new direction, and moment of creative agency. Intentionally titled as a nod to her unique genre-fluid ethos, it drew from a range of Yola’s influences that include progressive R&B, 70-80’s soulful pop, 90’s R&B and neo soul and a showcase of Yola powerhouse vocals which have been praised by media and fans (Elton John, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell included) as singular and the best of her generation.

Yola is also a true multi-hyphanate, exploring acting in recent years Yola reached a whole new audience portraying Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama, ELVIS, which earned her a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture, and recently she made her Broadway debut as Persephone in Hadestown. Through whatever medium Yola chooses to share her gifts, she remains an unstoppable force, and remains one of the most exciting and dynamic artists in music today.

BET put it best, “In the world of entertainment, Yola is a one-of-one.”

January 17, 2025 – Today, Yola released her highly anticipated new EP My Way, released via S Curve Records. Drawing influence from progressive R&B, classic funk and soulful pop, it marks a new era for the six-time GRAMMY-nominated artist.

Listen to My Way HERE // Listen to single “Temporary” HERE

Yola also announced her Sovereign Soul Tour, which will see Yola perform across the USA, beginning on May 10 in Denver, with performances in Nashville, Atlanta, Washington, DC, New York, and more – full dates and details below. General Onsale will begin Friday, January 24, and fan pre-sales ahead. Details will be at: https://www.iamyola.com/tour

Lead single “Temporary” is a hypnotizing disco, rare groove gem, with Yola delivering a sparkling vocal (which would make Donna Summer and Minnie Riperton proud) all while cheekily putting no-good men in their place. It’s an ode to fuck boys and their necessary but limited purpose.

Says Yola about lead single “Temporary,” “It is in part an ode to fuckboys, but it is also a verbal dagger in the side to the most vapid of daters. I wrote this song while I was single and dating, because I’d find after an intense period of serious dating, I’d get dating fatigue and that would start playing games on your mind. You are tempted to smash guys prematurely who you are dating for serious purposes, you create crushes that shouldn’t exist. So, fuckboys were a good tool to chemically manage pent up hormones, so I could focus. As you can tell I’m a highly strategic person, ha.”

My Way was produced by Yola, GRAMMY Award-winning producer Sean Douglas (Lizzo, Chris Brown, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Sia), and producer Zach Skelton (Lil Nas X, John Legend, Paul McCartney) and marks a new direction, and moment of creative agency.

Yola performs on CBS This Morning Saturday Sessions tomorrow, with a billboard in Times Square to celebrate

“My Way is not about creative dictatorship.” Yola states, sharing, “It’s about being free to do what the songs need, because I don’t need to guide people towards allowing me agency, free of any restriction so I can tell my story more fully than ever before. This is me at my most musically free, and maybe a little nostalgic.”

The new EP My Way intentionally titled as a nod to her unique genre-fluid ethos, draws from a range of Yola’s influences that include progressive R&B, 70-80’s soulful pop, 90’s R&B and neo soul, as well as the cornerstone influence of the UK broken beats scene, from which Yola emerged, performing with Bugz In The Attic in the mid 2000’s. Broken Beat, Bruk or The West London sound, was a dance music movement whose pioneers included IG Culture, Phil Asher, 4Hero, Gilles Peterson, and collective Bugz in the Attic, whose members included Orin Walters (Afronaut), Paul Dolby (Seiji), Kaidi Tatham, Daz-I-Kue, Alex Phountzi (Neon Phusion), Cliff Scott, Mark Force, and Matt Lord, plus Hannah Vasanth, who Yola collaborated with on her critically acclaimed album, Stand For Myself.

The EP opens with the blazing anthem “Future Enemies,” praised by FLOOD for its “disco madness of the highest order” and the rattling sensual track “Symphony” which the New York Times called “funky, upbeat celebration of sensuality.” Its luscious horn melodies and staccato vocals call back to the funk glory days of Parliament-Funkadelic and Earth, Wind and Fire.

The title track, “My Way,” is a middle finger to those who tried to control YOLA’s artistry through industry mind games. “I think you know there’s nothing I could say, so we’re gonna do this my way”, she grits through her teeth on the chorus.

The EP closes with perhaps its most definitive song, “Ready.” Inspired by the UK’s Broken Beat scene that YOLA holds so dearly, it is also a response to the anti-immigration sentiment, and specifically the story of the so called Windrush generation. From 1948 through 1971, thousands of Caribbean immigrants (including Yola’s mother), were encouraged to embark to the UK to help rebuild the post-war country and have since been met with racism and oppression.

“I remember being told to go back to where I came from when I was a kid and at the time that felt offensive because I was born in the uk, I was where I came from,” Yola stated, adding “They meant that I should go for the first time to the place where either of my parents were born. In hindsight that was a great idea, in fact it’s an even better idea if they can in turn tell the Brits to leave where TF I was going. You want me gone from the uk? Feel free to buy me a ticket to Accra in December or Bridgetown in August!”- See full statement on the track below.

My Way is yet another showcase of Yola powerhouse vocals which have been praised by media and fans (Elton John, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell included) as singular and the best of her generation. Through dexterous full voice and her subtle soulful delivery, Yola explores themes including relationship boundaries, creative autonomy, finding agency and navigating the experience of a white centering in the music industry.

She is also a true multi-hyphan, something she attributes to her Gha ancestry, ““The Ga tribe of Ghana are known for being some of the artsiest people of West Africa. Another Ga person is Idris Elba”- she says. Exploring acting in recent years Yola reached a whole new audience portraying Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama, ELVIS, which earned her a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture, and recently she made her Broadway debut as Persephone in Hadestown. Through whatever medium Yola chooses to share her gifts, she remains an unstoppable force, and remains one of the most exciting and dynamic artists in music today.

BET put it best, “In the world of entertainment, Yola is a one-of-one.”

Full statement from Yola on Ready:

“Ready is a song that has been percolating for most of my life. It’s kinda about being an immigrant and being a child of immigrants generally but it’s inspired more specifically by the windrush generation in the uk and the later arrivals of Caribbean people to uk shores, of which my mother was one such arrival.

The British turned up with videos shot on the sunniest day of the year in the uk, to convince Caribbeans that a life there would be seamless and financially beneficial. They could send money back home and build dream homes. What happened in reality was a massive bait and switch where they were sent on one way tickets leaving their elders vulnerable to predatory real estate practices that dispossessed locals of all beach front property.

I remember being told to go back to where I came from when I was a kid and at the time that felt offensive because I was born in the uk, I was where I came from. They meant that I should go for the first time to the place where either of my parents were born. In hindsight that was a great idea, in fact it’s an even better idea if they can in turn tell the Brits to leave where TF I was going. You want me gone from the uk? Feel free to buy me a ticket to Accra in December or Bridgetown in August!
MF fools telling me to leave a cold dark rainy island to relocate to paradise! Supremacy got them so twisted they didn’t even recognise what an upgrade looked like!

I may indeed one day end up in one of those two exact places when I retire, and the vibe in the song is very much giving “peace bitches I’m out” energy.”

Friday Nov 15, 2024 – Today, Yola released her anthemic new single “Symphony,” exploring the magic of both emotional and sexual connection, from her forthcoming EP My Way, set for release January 17 via S-Curve Records. Drawing influence from progressive R&B, classic funk and soulful pop, it marks a new era for the six-time GRAMMY-nominated artist.

Listen to “Symphony” HERE

The track, with its infectious drum beat, muscular bass line, and slinky funk guitar recalls the classic funk and broken beat scene that heavily influenced Yola in her formative years. A mantra-like chorus and vocal hook combines into a blend that pays homage to Childish Gambino, En Vogue, Janet Jackson and Funkadelic, and other key influences on this remarkable artist. Yola continues to move through musical spaces and claim them with agency and aplomb.

About the track, Yola says, “I’m exploring the element of surprise in this song, talking about when you’ve suddenly found someone that is not a fuckboy, someone that is not a waste of skin, and actually really dope. And you instantly feel ready to have both a deeper conversation and sexual connection. After experiencing dating app nightmares in these streets, there is a sense of surprise and profound shock when you meet someone that is a functioning human being, let alone the love of your life, especially in the context of this barrage of nightmares.”

Adding, “I was listening to a lot of classic funk at the time of making the record, and later I realized that Childish Gambino and I were listening to a lot of the same stuff, particularly the classic funk, syncopated group vocals that Parliament-Funkadelic pioneered. Everyone has a mic, the chorus and the verse are sung in chorus. I was excavating that vibe from my time in Bugz In The Attic, and I’m returning to it again now on this song.”

“Symphony” was produced by Yola, GRAMMY Award-winning producer Sean Douglas (Lizzo, Chris Brown, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Sia), and producer Zach Skelton (Lil Nas X, John Legend, Paul McCartney) and follows “Future Enemies,” her latest single released earlier this fall to critical acclaim. Both tracks mark a new direction, and a return to Yola’s musical roots, referencing UK’s Broken Beat scene, R&B, electronica, and more.

The new EP, intentionally titled My Way as a nod to her unique genre-fluid ethos, draws from a range of Yola’s influences that include progressive R&B, 70-80’s soulful pop, 90’s R&B and neo soul, as well as the cornerstone influence of the UK broken beats scene, from which Yola emerged, performing with Bugz In The Attic in the mid 2000’s.

Broken Beat, Bruk or The West London sound, was a dance music movement whose pioneers included IG Culture, Phil Asher, 4Hero, Gilles Peterson, and collective Bugz in the Attic, whose members included Orin Walters (Afronaut), Paul Dolby (Seiji), Kaidi Tatham, Daz-I-Kue, Alex Phountzi (Neon Phusion), Cliff Scott, Mark Force, and Matt Lord, plus Hannah Vasanth, who Yola collaborated with on her critically acclaimed album, Stand For Myself.

My Way showcases her powerhouse vocals which soulfully explore themes including relationship boundaries, creative autonomy, and even diving into political commentary, exploring the Windrush movement and the diasporic British subculture from which Yola draws inspiration.

About Yola

Yola is a six-time GRAMMY nominated artist, songwriter, and actor who has achieved critical acclaim, breakout success, and has been proclaimed as one of the most exciting and innovative artists in music today. NPR called her latest album, Stand For Myself (2021), the “best soul record of the past 20 years”, while Rolling Stone championed her as “one of contemporary pop’s greatest singers, who just so happens to also be one of its sharpest songwriters.”

Yola made her acting debut as the founder of rock and roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama, ELVIS, and earned a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture. She made her awards show performance debut at the American Music Awards in November 2022, as their featured SONG OF THE SOUL performer. That same evening the ELVIS movie soundtrack won the “Favorite Soundtrack” award. Yola is a member of The Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective, and to celebrate Yola’s impact and influence on music, her guitar was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Right Here, Right Now exhibit.

Recently, she starred on the hit Broadway musical Hadestown in New York City, portraying Persephone.

“Vaults Yola to another place in the pop world, with her boundless curiosity and vocal brawn” – Pitchfork

September 19, 2024 – Today, Yola releases her new single “Future Enemies,” her first new music release in 3 years, and a sonic shift for the groundbreaking artist. This is the first single from her forthcoming EP My Way, set for release November 15 via S-Curve Records, her new recording home, marking the beginning of a new era for the six-time GRAMMY nominated artist.

Listen to “Future Enemies” HERE + watch the live performance video HERE

“Future Enemies” showcases Yola’s undeniable vocals and is a unique “anthem for acquaintances” – about that split second of early insight, knowing someone may just well become an enemy, and ducking out of the relationship before it even begins.

Layering programming and synths with organic instrumentation, she combines progressive R&B and haunting electronica into thoughtful dance floor ready synth pop. Produced by Yola, Grammy Award-winning producer Sean Douglas (Lizzo, Chris Brown, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Sia), and producer Zach Skelton (Lil Nas X, John Legend, Paul McCartney) this debut single from the forthcoming EP marks a new direction, yet a return to Yola’s musical roots, referencing UK’s Broken Beat scene, R&B, electronica and more.

Says Yola about the track, “There is a moment when you realise you’re not going to get on with someone. They haven’t noticed yet, so you have a unique opportunity to disappear from their lives before they ever realise you were destined to be enemies. It’s a luxury to not have an endless supply of negative memories about someone cause you never made them. “Why don’t we just not!” I choose to save my time for situations, spaces and people that have no ticking timer of inevitable doom, because they don’t see me or centre a reality that does not serve me or my wellbeing. Of course when you’re a woman, culturally black (as well as physically black), dark skinned (and feminine in energy), plus size (and wilfully main character in energy), from a whole different continent and living in the west- let’s say you’re going to have to be both vigilant and choosy in life, in love in work. Oh and if you also want to be real, girl!!”

The new EP, intentionally titled My Way, as a nod to her unique genre-fluid ethos, draws from a range of Yola’s influences that include progressive RnB, 70-80s soulful pop, 90s R&B and neo soul, as well as the cornerstone influence of the UK broken beats scene, from which Yola emerged, performing with Bugz In The Attic in the mid 2000s.

My Way showcases her powerhouse vocals which soulfully explore themes including relationship boundaries, creative autonomy, and even diving into political commentary, exploring the Windrush movement and the diasporic British subculture from which Yola draws inspiration.

Says Yola about My Way, “I’ve been purposefully hinting about this direction for years. From covering Soul II Soul for Apple Music, to my covers on tour and reworkings of my songs, the broad church of soul music through the ages has always been the narrative. I’ve covered Yarborough and Peoples’s “Don’t Stop The Music” as a throwback nod to my time in the west London “Broken Beat” scene with collective Bugz In The Attic (we used to cover that song).

This time I’m exploring my love of soul music through influences like Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Sade, Prince, Minnie Riperton and various luminaries of rare groove and progressive RnB .

“For the past few years, Yola has been one of my favorite contemporary artists,” stated Steven Greenberg Founder/CEO of S-Curve Records, adding, “So, when I learned she’d fulfilled her previous recording commitments, we jumped at the opportunity to sign her to S-Curve. The music she’s been recording for this new project is classic Yola, yet she expands her musical palette by incorporating funk and late 80’s R&B influences in a very natural way. It’s an exciting evolution and I think her new music will delight Yola’s long-time fans, while simultaneously bringing lots of new listeners into the fold. We’re ready to do everything we can to help Yola build this next phase of her career.”
